ISMA Heads Back to Jennerstown July 15

After Successful 2016 Return, ISMA Ready to Take on Jennerstown Speedway July 15

by Carol D Haynes, ISMA PR

July 1, 2017 – Oswego, NY – In 2016 the lightning fast supers of the International Supermodified Association, (ISMA), returned to the Laurel Mountains of Pennsylvania to an old haunt Jennerstown Speedway after a nine-year hiatus.  Sixteen previous appearances from 1988-2007 produced many memorable moments at that .522-mile oval. The 2016 return was a much-anticipated and successful one. With new data to work with after last year’s return, this year’s July 15 visit is a can’t miss event.

While some of the competitors from those early trips like Bentley Warren, Eddie Bellinger Jr., Pat Abold,  Mike Ordway St. and the man who had won  six features there, Chris Perley, were not on the roster, many of the new generation provided an exciting  day of racing.

Mike Lichty, who was involved in a see-saw battle with Dave Shullick Jr. for the 2016 ISMA championship but Shullick was right behind him in this one as the two waged war for the win at a rapid pace after a not unexpected light shower came and went.

In a seventeen minute, twenty-eight second, 50-lap feature, only one short yellow flew to slow the action. The side by side racing and lead swapping out front, left the fans that stuck with it, in awe. Early leader Dave Shullick Jr, lost his spot to Mark Sammut, got it back one lap later and then lost it again to Mike Ordway Jr., but regained it in the same lap. When Ordway Jr.’s #61 shut down on lap 32, Mike Lichty, moving up from ninth, became the challenger and he was able to take over out front on lap 33, never to give up the spot. He took the checkered 17 laps later for a $4,200 payday.

Mark Sammut filled in the third spot on the podium with Moe Lilje, Ben Seitz, Jim Paller, Mike McVetta, Timmy Jedrzejek, Trent Stephens and Dan Bowes finishing up the top ten.

Seitz, in a new ride in 2017, is coming off a win at Stafford, where Timmy Jedrzejek chased him to the finish line, also driving a new car from the Lane Racing stable for the first time. New this also is Jon McKennedy in the P&L Vinyl 21 as he splits his time between the supermodified and the modifieds where he has excelled over the years. Perley should also be back as that team also is sorting out a new car, which debuted late last year.

After only three races to date this season, Ben Seitz has taken over the point lead in the Locke 37, trailed by Ohioans Trent Stephens, Mike McVetta, Dave Shullick and Timmy Jedrzejek in the Lane 97, followed by Jon McKennedy, Chris Perley, Dave McKnight, Mike Lichty and Tony Bowes in the top ten.

The Jennerstown Speedway Complex is located in Jennerstown, Somerset County in the Western PA’s Laurel Highlands, at the intersection of Rt. 30 and Rt. 985. The Farmers Union Co-Op 50-Lap ISMA Feature Powered by Milk is slated for Saturday July 15 with Gates Open: 4:00 pm | Races Start: 6:00 pm. Visit for information or call 814-703-8009.  Fans can buy tickets for this supermodified race online at the Jennerstown website.

Supermodified Racer Kyle Vanderpool Wins Sprint Car Race

MADERA, Calif. (June 8, 2015) – Kyle Vanderpool drove the Penix Racing No. 51 to his — and the team’s — first career Sprint Car win Saturday night at the 5th annual Summer Horsepower Nationals presented by Protect the Harvest and Hoosier Tire at California’s Madera Speedway.

Driving Penix Racing’s Beast sprint car, Vanderpool started the 30-lap main event from the third place and moved past pole-sitter Mike Murgoitio on the 12th circuit to claim the lead.

The 27-year-old Sanger, California shoe would never look back, leading the final 18 laps en route to the victory, crossing the finish stripe 2.3 seconds ahead of Murgoitio. Continue reading Supermodified Racer Kyle Vanderpool Wins Sprint Car Race

Two Wins in Four Races, Leads Points

MADERA, Calif. (July 22, 2014) – West coast supermodified racer Kyle Vanderpool has two wins in four Winged Sprints vs. Supermodifieds Challenge events at Madera Speedway in 2014, including his recent Saturday, July 12 triumph over 410 sprint racer Tim Skoglund.

Vanderpool out-ran Skoglund by a 4.6-second margin at the finish of the 30-lapper and set the race’s fast lap at a blistering 12.896 around Madera’s one-third-mile oval.

In the two Madera Sprint vs. Super shows Vanderpool has not won, he’s finished second. Veteran supermodified racer Jim Birges scored the victory over Kyle on May 3, while Jeff Collins wheeled his supermodified to the win over Vanderpool Saturday, June 7.

leading the Madera Sprint vs. Super point standings by 15 markers over Skoglund. Two races – August 9 and September 13 – remain on the 2014 schedule with Sept. 13 the prestigious annual Madera Harvest Classic, a race Vanderpool won in 2013.

“We keep making changes to the car and really we’ve been a little inconsistent,” Vanderpool admitted after his July 12 win. “We’ve been working with a different wing mounting setup that has changed the car. The competition has been strong at Madera this year and we’ve been fortunate to win twice and finish second a couple of times. We’re all looking forward to the rest of the year.”

Madera has been attracting 10 to 12 cars to the Sprint vs. Super shows with six to seven 410 or 360 supers normally in attendance.

Penix Racing’s No. 3 Belfab east-coast super will not be ready for this weekend’s Sandusky Speedway Hy-Miler Nationals in Ohio. Vanderpool did some ride hunting but it looks like the Californian will be sitting out this weekend instead of making a second consecutive attempt at the Hy-Miler.

As work in California continues to prepare Penix Racing east-coast super for competition, Vanderpool said the team is eyeing to run the Belfab chassis in the last three ISMA shows in 2014.

“We’re planning on running Oswego, Star and Thompson. We ran Star and Thompson last year and had some good speed so I’m really looking forward to getting back to ISMA shows at tracks we have a little experience at. This would be our first trip to Oswego for the Classic Weekend event and obviously I can’t wait for that one and I’m really hoping we can run it. Oswego is the home of supermodified racing in this country and it will be a real treat to run that track for the first time,” Vanderpool said.

Once the supermodified season concludes at Thompson in late October, Vanderpool and the Penix team will return to California and focus on Vanderpool taking a stab at some sprint car racing with the Davey Hamilton King of Wing Sprint Car Series November 21-23.

The three-night series will run Vanderpool’s home track, Madera Friday night, Irwindale Saturday and Kern County Raceway Park in Bakersfield on Sunday.

Penix Racing is anticipating fielding a sprint car for Vanderpool for the first time at these events. More news will be released later in the season as the King of Wing series approaches.
