What does the Battle of Trenton TQ Midget Race held at the Sun National Bank Center in Trenton, NJ have to do with supermodified racing?

Well, there’s a good number of supermodified racers and racers that have dabbled in  supermodified racing that like to spend time during the winter months in the close quarters of a TQ midget.

So here’s a little early Christmas present for all you “super groupies” out there that are longing to see supermodified racers in action.

Thanks to our friends Robert Gill and David Sink at R&S Racing Photos, we’re able to bring you a few shots of the Battle of Trenton TQ Midget race as seen through their lenses.

The event had over 60 entries and included supermodified racers Joey Payne, Jr., Lou Cicconi, Jr., Mike Lichty, Joey Scanlon, and Jon Gambuti.

While good guy Andy Jankowiak won the big show, “Liquid” Lou had a serious crash on lap 15. Lou hit the fourth turn wall with great impact and had to be extricated from his car. He was complaining of back pain but waved to the crowd as he headed to the crash house for further tests.  Lou was contacted early Sunday morning and replied via text thanking all those showing concern for his well-being.

2012 ISMA Champion Mike Lichty brought his TQ midget home in fourth place and Jon Gambuti finished up in sixth. Modified hot-shoe and former supermodified part-timer Teddy Christopher was third. The rest of the supermod racers didn’t fare so well with Joey Payne credited with 18th, and the aforementioned Cicconi 24th. Joey Scanlon missed the show. You can get more info at the Area Auto Racing News website.

If you want to see supermodified racers banging wheels and racing hard indoors during the winter, make sure you get to the next Len Sammons promotion which is the NAPA Know How Atlantic City Indoor races. This show is one of the best and is held inside of the beautiful and historic Boardwalk Hall and features the Gamblers Classic TQ midgets along with Tobias Slingshots and Champ Karts.

If you dig these shots, swing by the R&S Racing Photos Facebook page or hit them up on Twitter to show your appreciation for these fine shots. Remember it’s not too late to pick up a last-minute photo gift for the racer on your list!

    1. Same here. Like you, there’s a ton of great memories. Spent a lot of time as a kid making two runs a year to Ft. Wayne for USAC indoors, then a couple of years we went to the State Fairgrounds for the USAC shows in the exhibition barns down there. Later it was making the run to Niagra Falls, then AC through horrendous weather just to get a fix. As always thanks for sharing!
