Joey Payne Sets Oswego Speedway Track Record, Takes International Classic Pole Position

Payne One of Four Drivers Under Old Record

OSWEGO, NY (August 29, 2014) – Oswego Speedway’s Budweiser International Classic ‘Fast 14’ time trials proved to be historic Friday night, as Joey Payne shattered the supermodified track record with a lap of 15.802 seconds at 142.387 mph, to set on the pole for Sunday’s 58th annual International Classic.
Payne’s blistering lap aboard the Graham/Strong Racing Xtreme No. 99 bested a field of 37 supermodifieds to take time on Friday night, and was the fastest of three drivers to turn the first laps under 16 seconds in a non-wing supermodified.

The historic fast lap set by Payne was worth $1,000 from ‘Fast 14’ Supermodified front row sponsor Corr/Pak Merchandising.

Joining Payne in the 15 second club, and sharing the front row come Sunday, is his teammate Kody Graham in the No. 90.

Graham scorched the 5/8 mile with a time of 15.918 seconds, just over a tenth of a second off of Payne’s lap.

The third driver on the charts to turn a circuit under 16 seconds was Syrell Racing shoe Michael Barnes.

Barnes will forever have the distinct honor of being the first driver in Oswego Speedway history to turn a non-wing supermodified in the 15 second bracket with a lap of 15.979 seconds.

Unfortunately Barnes’ earlier time was not enough to hold off Xtreme teammates Payne and Graham.

Mr. Supermodified, David Danzer, just missed the 15 second mark with the No. 52, but was the fourth fastest car in time trials and was the fourth driver to go under the former track record of 16.098 seconds held by Bob Bond.

Danzer turned 16.012 seconds to join Barnes in row two.

Supermodified chassis experts will take note of an all Xtreme chassis front row in Payne and Graham, along with an all Hawk chassis second row in Danzer and Barnes.

Former International Classic champion Davey Hamilton, Ray Graham, last year’s Classic winner Bob Bond, Bobby Santos, Randy Ritskes, and three-time Classic champion Otto Sitterly will sit in the front ten spots for Sunday’s 200.

Defending International Classic pole sitter Pat Lavery, Dave Gruel, Joe Gosek, and Brian Sobus finished the ‘Fast 14’ qualifiers and are locked into Sunday’s Classic event.

Just two weeks after ending his first ride of the season against the front straight wall, Sobus cranked his No. 79 supermodified to a lap of 16.467 seconds to earn the final qualifying position.

Sobus has not started a main event all year, but is now guaranteed to start the Classic from the seventh row.

All drivers from 15th position on back in qualifying will have to time again on Sunday at noon in second round time trials.

Brian Sweeney’s lap of 16.525 seconds was the 15th fastest time of the night, just missing the ‘Fast 14’.

A total of 41 supermodifieds were in the pit area on Friday with Craig Rayvals, Lou LeVea Jr., Joe Chillemi, and the Buske No. 66 not taking time.

Lou LeVea Sr. opted to time the former Kerfien supermodified on Friday, which was entered as No. 96.

Joe Chillemi took the green to his qualifying attempt but lost the rear wing on the machine and spun in turn two.

Chillemi elected not to return to the track.

The day saw two incidents with Jerry Curran and Dave Sanborn finding the outside wall in two separate altercations.

Curran tangled with the outside front stretch wall in the No. 24 early in hot laps, but was able to repair front end damage.

Sanborn found the outside third turn wall in the No. 07 in a jingle with Gene Lee Gibson, but was also able to fix the machine prior to time trials.
